Through HSC Health Center for Older Adults education programs, health professions students and residents learn to work together as an interprofessional team, while at the same time, improve skills and knowledge necessary to deliver quality care for older adults.

Health Professions Students

Seniors Assisting in Geriatric Education (SAGE)

Interprofessional student teams interact with a volunteer older adult mentor through structured assignments delivered in the home or virtual environment. Students learn about the needs of today’s older adult while older adult mentors guide the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Geriatrics Rotation – Residents and Students

This four-week clinical experience aims to provide medical students, advance practice practitioner students, and residents with a foundation for competent and compassionate care of older adults. This includes attitudes, knowledge, and skills required to care for older adults in both outpatient and long term care settings.

Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR)

The MSTAR Program provides medical students completing their first year with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics with the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences that they might not otherwise have during medical school early in their training.

Caring for Older Adults Online Elective

This four-week, online geriatrics course is designed to provide students with additional experiences in geriatrics as they learn about settings of care, special topics, and system resources to provide optimal care for older adults.

Geriatrics ECHO for Resident Education

Faculty in the Center for Older Adults will lead monthly sessions for residents at area hospitals, using the ECHO model.

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) Research

TCOM fosters collaborative research initiatives in which basic, translational, and clinical researchers work together across disciplines and specialties to discover fundamental insights into human health and disease and to apply their discoveries to develop new diagnostic tools and treatments.

The Student Chapter of the American Geriatrics Society (SCAGS)

The purpose of SCAGS at TCOM is to spark interest in the field of geriatrics, enhance the visibility of geriatric medicine at the student-level, and provide educational programs in geriatric medicine.
