Students and alumni at SACNAS speaker series on science careers

The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science chapter at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth has received a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to expand career development opportunities in science for PhD students at HSC.

For the third year, the grant will support a speaker series aimed at exposing graduate students to diverse careers in research and science. The series titled “Career Seminar Series: So, You Got a PhD…What’s Next?” will invite College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences alumni back to campus to talk about how they have applied their doctoral degrees in areas outside of academia. The speaker series will resume in the fall.

“Although I came into the program knowing I did not want to pursue a career in academia, I was still unaware of the many opportunities for a PhD beyond the academic landscape,” said Olivia Young, PhD student and SACNAS at HSC president.

“I’m extremely thankful for the series exposing me to paths I’ve never considered or even heard of, realizing that I can have a career outside of academia that still matches my interests.”

Along with highlighting careers in research and science, the talks provide a chance for students to meet and network with alumni with a broad range of industry experience.

“The Career Seminar Series has been an integral part of my graduate school training for the last 3 years. When I was unsure of what kind of career or professional development skills or aspects I was interested in, I always looked back at my intersection with the speakers from this series as a guidance from real people, real alumni, with real live experience, not from a textbook or random internet blog,” said Kay Trinh, PhD student and SACNAS at HSC member.

“I felt more grounded as a graduate student when making prospective job decisions.”

The SACNAS chapter at HSC supports the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans students to attain advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in science. While the chapter originally started in CBTS, students from all HSC schools are welcome to join.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund provides grants that support biomedical research, STEM education and career development.
