Ashlyn Aguiniga, PharmD, BCACP
Assistant Professor of Pharmacotherapy
Education and Experience:
I received my Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in Wichita, Kansas. Upon graduating in 2017, I completed a PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency program with an emphasis in ambulatory care at the University of Wyoming Family Medicine Residency Program and Healthcare for the Homeless. I then completed a PGY-2 ambulatory care residency program with an academia focus at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy and Jordan Valley Community Health Center. I joined the faculty at UNT System College of Pharmacy in Fall 2019.
Teaching Areas and Interests:
My teaching experience includes large-group lectures, small group facilitation, and experiential education of multiple types of learners including pharmacy students, medical students, pharmacy residents, medical residents, and other members of the healthcare team. My teaching interests involve management of chronic disease states, especially in cardiology and endocrinology topics, as well as professionalism and practice management topics such as interprofessionalism and collaborative practice. I currently teach within the integrated pharmacotherapy courses for cardiology, endocrinology, and dermatology. Additionally, I precept advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) students on ambulatory care rotations at my practice site, HSC Health Family Medicine Clinic.
Professional Activities and Awards:
I am an active member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), American Pharmacists Association (APhA), and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). I am also an active member of the ACCP Ambulatory Care Practice and Research Network. Additionally, I was inducted into the Beta Iota chapter of the Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) leadership society as a pharmacy student. I currently serve as a co-advisor for the student chapter of ACCP at UNT System College of Pharmacy.
Scholarly Interests:
My clinical research interests include chronic disease state management and patient education, specifically in diabetes and cardiology. Having significant background in underserved patient populations, I am also interested in evaluating health literacy and health disparities with relation to chronic disease state management. Previous scholarship projects have focused on comprehensive diabetes management in an underserved patient population and patient education methods in diabetes management. With regards to scholarship of teaching in learning, I am interested in active learning strategies and interprofessional education.
