UNTHSC Professor Awarded Fulbright Grant

Sue Lurie, PhD, assistant professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences for the College of Public Health, University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (UNTHSC), has been awarded a five-month Fulbright grant, beginning in September 2009, to teach at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Lurie will also pursue future research opportunities while in Hungary.
Dr. Lurie received her PhD in anthropology from the University of Oklahoma and completed a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) post-doctoral fellowship in ethnography and public policy through Northwestern University. She currently teaches foundations of individual and community health, anthropology of health and qualitative research methods in the MPH and DrPH degree programs for the UNTHSC College of Public Health. Her research projects with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) focus on tuberculosis education with Hispanic service organizations and TB contact investigation time study. Other projects include community breast cancer research for The Komen Foundation, and assessments of health and social needs of elderly and homeless persons.
Dr. Lurie is a member of the American Public Health Association, American Anthropological Association, Society for Medical Anthropology-Bioethics Group, National Association for the Practice of Anthropology, and Society for Applied Anthropology.
The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 286,000 participants from over 155 countries with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
