Nearly one million people have died from a drug overdose in the past decade, with a sharp increase since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A variety of evidence-based strategies exist to prevent overdoses, but they are often not well implemented into community settings.
The HSC College of Public Health (SPH) will present a Grand Rounds educational program on Monday, June 6, at 2 p.m. in EAD 703, featuring HSC Regents Professor Scott Walters, PhD, on “The HEALing Communities Study: Creating a Model to Address the National Opioid Crisis.”
The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) is a NIH/NIDA-funded large cluster randomized trial of 67 communities to assist with adoption of evidence-based practices to prevent drug use and other risky behaviors. Through this work, the HEALing Communities Study is developing a national model to address the opioid crisis.
As Chair of the National Steering Committee, Dr. Walters will share his observations conducting implementation science research as well as early insights from this ongoing study.
