Dr. Malinee Neelamegam
“If I could work on any kind of research, what would it be?”
While my paternal grandfather lived to be 102, my maternal grandfather died of a cardiac arrest in his 50s. I was too young to know about their biological risk factors, but from stories I have heard about their lives, I know they came from very different backgrounds and lived very different lives. I am fascinated with aging; especially how different the trajectory of aging can be in different individuals. Much of my work has looked at this. I continue to be fascinated by how our lived experiences in our young and mid-adulthood impacts our health and well-being in our older years. I am very fortunate to be able to continue doing my research in this area. If I could conduct any kind of research, I would (and I continue to aspire to in the future) study how incarceration impacts aging trajectories and how it can inform the systemic reform of sentencing and the criminal justice system.
