UNT Health Science Center College of Public Health participates in ONE Summit

Kristine Lykens, PhD, MPA, AB, associate professor of Health Management and Policy at UNT Health Science Center’s (UNTHSC) College of Public Health (second from left), and UNTHSC Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) student and Public Health Student Association (PHSA) president Susan N. Jackson, MPH, CHES (right), recently attended the ONE Summit in Washington, DC, as volunteer congressional district leaders for the ONE campaign, http://www.one.org/ .
ONE is a global grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than two million members to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and working with political leaders to support policies and programs to save lives, help put children in school and improve futures.
Pictured with Dr. Lykens and Ms. Jackson are Roscoe Maps (left), field director for ONE’s Western Region, and Paul A. Offit, MD, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, who is co-inventor of the rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq, recommended for universal use infants by the CDC. For this work, Dr. Offit received the Jonas Salk Medal from the Association for Infection Control and Epidemiology, the Charles Merieux Award from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and other honors, including recognition at the launch of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Living Proof Project for global health.
In their role as ONE congressional district volunteer leaders, Dr. Lykens and Ms. Jackson interact with legislators to help further advocacy efforts and assist with ONE recruitment, meetings, activities and promotions within the Tarrant County, Texas, region.
