UNTHSC Public Health Professor Published in APHA Newsletter

Sue Lurie, PhD, assistant professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences for the College of Public Health, University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (UNTHSC), recently published an article in the American Public Health Association’s Community Health Planning & Policy Development newsletter on health planning by non-governmental organizations in Hungary and the U.S.  This article is the result of Dr. Lurie’s five-month Fulbright study and teaching at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, from September 2009 to January 2010.

Dr. Lurie holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Oklahoma and completed a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) post-doctoral fellowship in ethnography and public policy through Northwestern University.  She currently teaches foundations of individual and community health, anthropology of health and qualitative research methods in the MPH and DrPH degree programs for the UNTHSC College of Public Health.  Her research projects with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) focused on tuberculosis education with Hispanic service organizations and TB contact investigation time study.  Other projects include community breast cancer research for The Komen Foundation, and assessments of health and social needs of elderly and homeless persons.

Dr. Lurie is a member of the American Public Health Association, American Anthropological Association, Society for Medical Anthropology-Bioethics Interest Group and the Society for Applied Anthropology.
