HSC IMSD Program

The project has three main objectives:
  • Enhance the pool of underrepresented students that complete a Ph.D. and continue in biomedical research careers.
  • To ensure that at least 80% of Ph.D. students will complete the Ph.D. degree
  • Contribute to ongoing student and faculty efforts to reduce the gap in the completion of Ph.D. degrees between underrepresented students and those from other backgrounds in participating departments.
Length of Support:
  • 2 years of support per participant
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Submit an application to the IMSD program
  • Students must be in good academic standing in the Grad school
  • A student participant must be a citizen, a non-citizen national, or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence. A noncitizen national is a person who, although not a citizen of the United States, owes permanent allegiance to the U.S. They are generally persons born in lands that are not States, but are under U.S. sovereignty, jurisdiction, or administration (e.g. American Samoa). An individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence must possess a Permanent Resident Card (I-551) prior
Program Components:
  • Mentor-directed Research toward completion of degree
  • Attendance at scheduled IMSD Scholar events
  • Timely completion of Evaluation and Individual Development Plans (IDP)
  • Career and Professional Development expectations

– Publications

-Training and Grant submissions (intramural and extramural (e.g. NIH/Foundations)

-Abstract submissions to local, regional, and National Scientific Meetings.

-Institutional Service

-Peer-Support to fellow IMSD Scholars

Application Materials:

  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member of his/her current major advisor
