College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences

Kukuletta

CBTS takes great pride in shaping the future of the biomedical workforce through innovative degree programs. Our students are tomorrow’s educators, researchers and health care professionals. The graduate programs in CBTS include traditional dissertation and thesis-based research degrees, applied master’s degrees in biotechnology and clinical research management, and a specialized master’s degree that prepares students for careers in science or professional medical programs.

Our online bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences is the first undergraduate program to be offered at HSC. We offer a core curriculum centered on providing the foundational knowledge for students in a variety of career opportunities, such as academic or industry research, government and regulatory affairs and many other scientific fields, with many elective course options tailored to your academic journey to your goals. This innovative program requires 60 earned, transferred credit hours from an accredited undergraduate institution and is centered on biomedical principles directed toward understanding health and disease. Students enrolled in the program will gain extensive knowledge of applied human biology, including biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and microbiology. The program also prepares students for admission to an advanced graduate degree or professional health care programs, such as medical, dental, veterinary and pharmacy schools.

Dr. J. Michael Mathis, PhD, EdD

Dean Mathis Headshot

Dean of the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences at HSC, works collaboratively with faculty, staff and students across three basic science departments to promote educational excellence, advanced biomedical research and dedication to service.

In addition to supporting the school, Dr. Mathis participates in cancer translational research to develop novel gene and cell therapy approaches using virus-based and nanoparticle delivery vehicles. He recently established a pre-clinical imaging core at HSC, providing investigators and students with access to state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) technologies for research applications. He has published more than 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals during his scientific career.

Dr. Mathis received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama and postdoctoral training at the University of California in San Diego.

CBTS Programs

This program is designed for undergraduate degree completion with a robust curriculum focused on providing cutting-edge education for careers in health care-related fields while offering online flexibility and affordable tuition. Student resources include a program-dedicated academic support navigator, faculty mentors, academic support and tutoring services, career preparation and well-being support.

Our certificate program provides the necessary skillset for entrepreneurial-minded health care providers and biomedical scientists to become industry innovators. This 12-credit-hour program is designed to offer four courses with real- world applications.

The specialized master’s in medical science is designed to provide additional opportunities to those who want to enhance their credentials for entry into medical, dental or other professional schools. The cohort option is intended for students who work best in an in-person team setting alongside other students with daily faculty interaction.

Similar to the cohort program, the 100% online option is also designed to enhance student credentials in applying to professional schools while offering the convenience of distance learning. In addition to a rigorous biomedical science curriculum presented in a flexible asynchronous setting, students have access to application and skills workshops and faculty advisors who teach in a health science center environment.

The program, ranked as the second best-in-value program in the nation, offers a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes a broad-based view of the biomedical sciences, provides in-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements (CFR, GCP), ethical issues of clinical management and builds the medical writing and administrative skills necessary to conduct clinical research.

The specialized master’s in biotechnology program is designed to train students for careers in industry and research by providing the tools and experience needed for highly technical positions in emerging biotechnology companies, life science organizations, pharmaceutical and medical device companies and research institutions.

During the first year, our students acquire a background in biomedical science, consisting of topics in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, pharmacology, physiology and immunology. Students also take discipline-specific advanced courses and electives based on their needs and academic discipline. While working on their thesis or dissertation research, students participate in mentored experimental research projects with faculty who match their interests. Currently, we offer the following eight disciplines: Biochemistry and Cancer Biology; Cell Biology, Immunology, and Microbiology; Genetics; Integrative Physiology; Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacotherapy; Pharmacology and Neuroscience; Structural Anatomy and Rehabilitation Science; and Visual Sciences.
