Recognizing the best in research

David SatcherBy Jan Jarvis

Retired U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, whose career also includes posts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Morehouse School of Medicine, will be the keynote speaker during Research Appreciation Day (RAD).

Dr. Satcher, known for his commitment to eliminating health disparities for minorities and the poor, is only the second person in history to serve as Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary of Health in the Department of Health and Human Services simultaneously.

His dedication to public service also includes serving as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and administrator of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from 1993 to 1998.

Today he serves as director of The Satcher Health Leadership Institute, which was established in 2006 at the Morehouse School of Medicine. The Institute’s mission is to develop a diverse group of public health leaders, foster and support leadership strategies and influence policies toward the elimination of health disparities.

RAD is a UNT Health Science Center tradition that provides students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to share their research with the campus community and the public, said Thomas Yorio, PhD, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. A panel of judges will select the top presentation in each category and prizes will be awarded.

“This day is a great day for all of us and provides opportunity for research collaborations to flourish,” Dr. Yorio said.
