Cowtown celebrates 30 years
Be a part of the 30th anniversary of the Cowtown Marathon and other running events. The University of North Texas Health Science Center, original founder of the Cowtown, will be one of this year’s presenters, and Dr. Christopher Mann, UNT Health, will help spearhead the medical team assigned to treat the Cowtown participants.

What: Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, The Cowtown is one of the top multi-race events in the United States. The event features a 26.2 mile marathon, a half marathon, a 10K, an Adult 5K, a Kids 5K, and new for the 30th anniversary, an ultra marathon – a 50K event of 30-plus miles. More than 12,000 runners are expected to participate in this year’s races. This family-oriented event is open to runners of all levels and ages.
When: Saturday, Feb. 23; the marathon, half marathon and ultra marathon begin at 7:30 a.m.; the adult 5K and 10K begin at 8:15 a.m.; the kids 5K begins at 9 a.m.
Where: Fort Worth – Sundance Square in downtown; the marathon, half marathon and ultra marathon start at 3rd and Houston; the 10K run starts at 3rd and Throckmorton; the adult and kids 5K start at 2nd and Commerce
Audience: Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities can enter the races. Marathon and ultra marathon entrants must be at least 18 years old. Spectators are welcome at no charge. See the Cowtown Web site for the "Best Places to Watch."
Volunteer Opportunities: The event utilizes 3,000 volunteers in many capacities on race day as well as the weeks before and after race day. All volunteers receive a complimentary T-shirt, which is available only to runners and volunteers. Call the Volunteer hotline at 817 735-2044 or email tgalindo@hsc.unt.edu to join in the fun. Expo: The Cowtown Health and Fitness Expo will feature vendors of running clothing and gear, as well as products and services to enhance your fitness level. Samples, prizes, and a big 30th birthday party are part of this activity. Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, in the big tent on the Chisholm Trail Lot at Main and 4th, and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on race day. The birthday party is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday night.
Cost/Registration: All races can be entered up until the starting gun goes off, but the prices get higher as the date gets closer. See the Cowtown Web site for details on how and where to register. On-line registration is also available until Feb. 15 at noon.
