50 Heroes: Dr. Edward Elko
Dr. Elko retired in 1996, but his name remains engrained on medical education at HSC.
Each year, a group of TCOM students are placed in Elko College, one of six Advisory Colleges, which are mentoring networks that serve as a learning community for students and promote greater interaction between faculty and students.
The colleges promote professionalism, wellness and professional development, elements that Dr. Elko helped instill in students during his more than 20 years at HSC.
The Dr. Edward E. Elko Student Affairs Scholarship supports students who meet HSC’s continuing academic performance standards and have held leadership positions in student government organizations on campus.
As a pharmacology faculty member, Dr. Elko was awarded the M. L. Coleman Pre-Clinical Professor of the Year Award for 1988-89. He also served as Associate Dean for Basic Sciences from 1981-1986 and Associate Dean for Student Affairs from 1989-1996.
Upon retirement, Dr. Elko was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus and, the following year, received the Mary E. Luibel Distinguished Service Award.
