50 Heroes: Dr. Thomas Moorman
Dr. Thomas Moorman served others every day.
Whether helping students replace possessions lost to a house fire or lending a sympathetic ear to students and colleagues facing challenges, Dr. Moorman helped countless people achieve their full potential at HSC.
Fittingly, in 2015, Dr. Moorman was the first recipient of the university’s “Valubility of the Year” honor.
Many of the student service programs at HSC were designed and implemented under Dr. Moorman’s direction. He joined HSC in 1994 on the student affairs team. A few years later, he wrote a grant proposal that created the White Coat Ceremony on campus, an enduring tradition that continues today.
Dr. Moorman also initiated the creation of the Center for Academic Performance. He founded the Office of Wellness Services, the Career Center, and the Office of International Services.
Dr. Moorman and his wife, Melissa Dill Moorman, support students financially with their education and training. They began making monthly contributions to a student scholarship fund through the UNTHSC Foundation many years ago. That scholarship is now fully endowed and provides a scholarship annually to a student leader.
Dr. Moorman retired in 2019 as Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives. His passion for education is unmatched. Upon his retirement, he called leadership the greatest gift he has received.
“I have come to know that if I invest in the success of the individuals around me, they will invest in me as well,” he said. “My proudest moments have been witnessing their individual successes.”
For that, Dr. Moorman is an HSC Hero.
