50 Heroes: Mayor Betsy Price

Mayor Betsy Price and HSC share a mission to create solutions for a healthier community.

Price, first elected Mayor in 2011, has consistently promoted strategies and activities that improve the fitness, health and well-being of Fort Worth residents. Her devotion to elevating the city’s overall health makes her a dynamic and natural partner for the Health Science Center.

Mayor Price and HSC collaborated to form FitWorth, an initiative designed to help community members choose a healthy way of life. Statistics showed that 30 percent of Fort Worth residents are overweight, including many children. FitWorth draws together local business leaders, educators, retailers and families to create a culture of wellness through physical activity and mindful eating.

Mayor Price also supported the creation of the Texas Christian University and UNT Health Science Center School of Medicine. The medical school, which was announced in 2015, welcomed its inaugural class last summer and, along with the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, will help reduce the physician shortage in North Texas and beyond. As a result, more people will be able to access the high-quality health care they need and deserve.

Mayor Price is a frequent guest at HSC events, celebrating the opening of the on-campus Lena Pope Early Learning Center, leading employees and students on healthy exercise walks and working to help highlight and magnify HSC’s value in the community.

The importance of HSC’s partnership with Mayor Price was evident when COVID-19 spread to Texas. HSC and the city of Fort Worth worked together to quickly establish two HSC-operated COVID-19 test sites, launch a public information campaign about the pandemic and identify other partnerships to protect and empower community members.

For her unwavering support of HSC’s mission, Mayor Price is a Hero.
