50 Heroes: Rand Horsman
Calling Rand Horsman a “people person” only states the obvious. In his 25 years of HSC Human Resources leadership, Rand was beloved by students, faculty and staff alike. Ask anyone, and they will tell you he served with joy and tried always to improve any situation – even the most difficult.
“Rand would show up at my office unannounced and say, ‘I’m from Human Resources and I’m here to help,’” remembers Provost Emeritus Tom Yorio. “My response was always, ‘OK, who did what now?’”
Dr. Yorio continues, “He always provided sage advice concerning personnel issues, and I learned so much from him.”
Rand is credited with building the Human Resources function at the HSC into a professional office to support the many campus needs. But it is his heart for helping others that most list first when asked about his contributions.
A prime example was his idea to use golf as a tool to meet the needs of others. In 2001, Rand launched the “Hackers Golf Tournament,” a small event that raised funds to provide emergency assistance and scholarship awards to HSC employees. The tourney has evolved and grown tremendously since.
Today, the Rand Horsman Scholarship Golf Tournament is held annually and has touched hundreds of HSC employees and their dependents with $1,000 awards for tuition use at any college of their choice. Rand remains at the helm, still committed to building an endowment, building the awards made each year, and building his legacy of service to others.
