A dream car worth waiting for

Some stories are just too good to be true. Here’s one that’s good as well as true.

Bill McIntosh was just a kid when he fell in love with the new 1953 MG TD. He dreamed about how, one day, he’d own one. His parents bought him a die-cast metal model kit of the little British roadster that he assembled happily, bolt by painstaking screw, then carefully painted a beautiful hue of yellow.

Flash-forward to his late 20s as the now-Dr. McIntosh (DO) bids on his dream car at a collector auction, only to come up tantalizingly short.

Another flash-forward to now: The semi-retired physician and UNTHSC faculty member (34 years) takes the advice of life-partner Cathy White, procuring a few raffle tickets to benefit UNTHSC via its "An Evening with a Legend" event starring Jay Leno. The prize: a mint-perfect, yellow 1953 MG TD.

The story ends as one hoped it would, with Dr. McIntosh navigating his first mile behind the wheel of his dream machine, chortling to bystanders and passersby, "Stand back, save yourselves!"

Might his next dream be a bigger garage?
