Biochemist honored by American Chemical Society

Laszlo Prokai, PhD, DSc, is the winner of the Wilfred T. Doherty Award, which recognizes significant achievements in research, teaching, and service.

The award is given annually by the American Chemical Society and honors a chemist or chemical engineer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. It is named for Wilfred T. (Doc) Doherty, one of the founding trustees and later president of the Welch Foundation, a Texas-based philanthropic organization that supports chemical research.

The award includes a $1,500 honorarium and engraved plaque.

“I am honored to receive recognition from the American Chemical Society for the work I have been doing in the field,” Dr. Prokai said.

Dr. Prokai is Professor and Robert A. Welch Chair in Biochemistry at UNT Health Science Center. His research focuses on central nervous system drug discovery, analytical biochemistry, neurochemistry and proteomics.

Dr. Prokai has also received the 2017 Southwest Regional Award from the American Chemical Society recently, which will be presented at the society’s regional meeting on October 31st in Lubbock, TX.
