Community Garden is on the grow
The UNT Health Science Center Community Garden marks its first birthday Feb. 15 and will expand with nine more plots later that month. Here are its major accomplishments so far – not bad for a 1-year-old:
- More than 60 pounds of fresh organic produce have been donated to a local food pantry.
- Guided tours have been conducted for 250 people, mostly schoolchildren, educating them on sustainable food production.
- The garden was built literally from the ground up with the work of more than 40 volunteers, a collaboration among students and employees.
- Dozens of beginners have been taught how to garden organically.
The 16 garden plots are on the campus at 3621 W. Seventh St. and are a project of the Office of Sustainability within Facilities Management. It was funded by the Sustainability Committee and donations from eight community businesses and organizations.
The garden supports UNTHSC’s mission and values in many ways.
“It’s an exciting way to collaborate in promoting good health through nutritious foods. I have shared these herbs and vegetables with my colleagues and patients,” said gardener Kathlene Camp, PT.
Most of the produce donations go to the Northside Inter-Community Agency.
“The fresh organic produce has been especially well received by our senior clients who often lack the resources to afford such healthy vegetables,” Outreach and Programs Coordinator Rob Ludlow said. “It is partnerships like this that enable NICA to better serve the community and help feed those who need it most.”
On Feb. 21, volunteers will expand the garden. Eventually, community members will be invited to have plots. If you are interested in helping with the hands-on work or expansion, or donating cash or in-kind materials, contact sustainability@unthsc.edu or call 817-735-2451.
