A delegation of five representatives from Hampton University visited The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth’s campus on Friday.

Hampton University is a private, historically Black university founded in 1868 in Hampton, Virginia. The group included President of Hampton University U.S. Army Lieutenant General Darrell K. Williams, Ret., his wife First Lady Myra and members of Hampton leadership who stopped in the Dallas/Fort Worth region as part of a big-city tour. Various professors from Hampton University also joined the meeting between Hampton and HSC virtually via Zoom.

This is the first time Hampton University representatives have met with leaders of HSC on campus. The meeting served as exploration for partnership opportunities and pathways between universities and possible community connections. Hampton made a special request to visit HSC specifically.

“We were thrilled to host Hampton University during their visit to DFW,” said HSC President Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams. “There are many areas of strategic opportunity for both of our schools to increase access to health sciences, deepen our research capabilities and create more pathways for students, faculty and staff.”

Members of the community were also in attendance representing the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber, the United Way of Tarrant County, Techstars, the Veterans Affairs Health Network and the Open Channels Group.

During the visit, Trent-Adams presented President Williams with a pen crafted from a pine tree that was once on the top of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine building as part of the “topping out” ceremony in 1978, and a bouquet of crimson and cream flowers (colors for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated) to his wife Myra who is an alumna of Hampton and member of the sorority.

Various HSC staff are Hampton alumni including HSC President Trent-Adams ‘87, College of Nursing Associate Dean & Professor Dr. Cheryl Thaxton ’92 and HSC Chief of Staff Taunya Williams ‘90.

“As a proud Hampton University alumna, it was an honor to host them on our beautiful HSC campus,” said Taunya Williams. “We look forward to continuing and deepening our relationship not only with Hampton, but with other HBCUs, HSIs and universities across Texas and the country.”
