HSC College of Pharmacy to host ‘The Future of Pharmacy in Texas’

Llm2018headshotThe University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth’s College of Pharmacy will host “The Future of Pharmacy in Texas” on Thursday to address opportunities and solutions for bridging the future of the pharmacy profession with workforce needs.

The event will feature regionally and nationally regarded experts in pharmacy education and practice as part of HSC’s 2023 Health Care Workforce & Education Series. Beginning with a reception and networking at 5:15 p.m., the free event is open to the public. It will be held on campus in the Medical Education & Training Building, 1000 Montgomery St., with a livestream option. Space is limited.

Lucinda Maine, Ph.D., R.Ph., will present the keynote address titled “Dynamics of the Pharmacy Workforce — Challenges and Opportunities.” Maine has served in the pharmacy profession for nearly five decades, most recently as executive vice president and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the leading advocate for pharmacy education.

Prior to her 20-year career with AACP, Maine played a pivotal role as the senior vice president for policy, planning and communications with the American Pharmacists Association. She focused on analyzing health care trends, assessing their impact on pharmacy practice and advocating for appropriate recognition of pharmacists. Maine has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the profession’s highest honor, the American Pharmacists Association’s Remington Honor Medal.

“With her vast knowledge, expertise and unwavering dedication to advancing pharmacy practice, Lucinda Maine continues to shape the future of the profession and inspire aspiring pharmacists across the nation,” said Dr. S. Suresh Madhavan, dean and professor of HSC College of Pharmacy. “As the premier Health Science Center in North Texas educating pharmacists of the future, it is imperative that we prepare our students to practice at the top of their license and to adapt to the ever-changing health care landscape. This discussion will highlight the essential role of pharmacists among the health care team and the importance of collaboration among pharmacy educators, practitioners and leaders to advance the profession.”

In addition to the keynote presentation, distinguished pharmacist experts will discuss current education and workforce trends, opportunities and solutions.

Guest panelists include John L. Colaizzi Jr, Pharm.D., vice president, pharmacy services and delivery, Walgreen Co.; Carter High, Pharm.D., president, Texas Pharmacy Association and co-owner, Best Value Pharmacies; and Alex C.
