HSC to sponsor Chair for Teaching Excellence in Secondary Science award by the Fort Worth Independent School District
The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (HSC) is working with the Fort Worth Independent School District to reward outstanding educators by sponsoring the Chair for Teaching Excellence in Secondary Science.
Sponsorships from community partners and local businesses salute great teachers while also giving them an honorarium. An awards luncheon is also held for teachers selected as outstanding educators.
“Preparing today’s children to become the doctors, scientists, and researchers of tomorrow begins early in their education and is accomplished through the hard work and dedication of our outstanding teachers,” said Dr. Charles Taylor, Provost and Executive Vice President of The Health Science Center at Fort Worth.
HSC’s participation in the program is an investment in science and health for students in kindergarten through grade 12.
“Science is at the core of helping us live our best lives every day through our overall health and well-being,” Dr. Taylor said. “At HSC, we provide the final tier of science-based education for future generations to become outstanding health care providers and professionals. We are honored to be a part of the ‘Chair for Teaching Excellence in Secondary Science’ program as it emphasizes the importance of integrating science in all students’ curriculum throughout their entire educational journey.”
HSC faculty, health experts, students, and volunteers have worked with the school district in several areas, including supporting physical wellness programs and tutoring high school students attending the Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences.
“The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth is a strong supporter of the Fort Worth Independent School District, especially related to science and health curriculum,” said Superintendent Kent P. Scribner. “They know the importance of giving students work-based opportunities and exposure to many careers in the health and science fields. Fort Worth ISD is proud to collaborate with HSC, and we are grateful for their continued commitment to our students, teachers, and community.”
The Teaching Chair Program has been in existence since 1994 and has expanded in size and depth through the years. Fort Worth ISD has 16 different categories by which teachers in kindergarten through grade 12 are recognized. It is modeled after the university-level chair program and rewards exemplary educators.
Sponsors contribute to awarding excellence in education while getting an inside look at what it takes to be an outstanding teacher. Representatives from sponsoring companies or organizations sit on the selection panel.
