Love is in the air at HSC College of Pharmacy

Pharm CoupleMost student pharmacists expect to part pharmacy school with their well-earned degree and a new and fulfilling career path ahead. For Class of 2018 alumni Abigail Hulsizer, PharmD, and Oscar Torres, PharmD, their achievement was much sweeter. They found true love.

Introduced by mutual friends during their first semester of pharmacy school, Hulsizer and Torres began talking when they both volunteered at a Walmart Health Fair. Coincidentally, Torres currently works at the same Walmart where the spark began.

Once they became a couple, Hulsizer found great comfort in having someone close to lean on during pharmacy school.

“We would study together, celebrate successes together, go to events together, get food after exams together and share the experience with one another,” she said.

For Torres, his favorite part of dating someone in his class was getting to see each other every day.

Today, they are both thriving in their careers.

After graduating, Hulsizer entered clinical pharmacy residency and returned to HSC as an assistant professor of pharmacotherapy, where she gets to do what she loves most, mentoring and teaching students. She is also a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and practices as an internal medicine clinical pharmacist at Medical City Arlington.

Torres pursued the community pharmacy route, starting his first job as a retail pharmacy manager, and currently splits his time between Walmart and Texas Health Huguley Hospital.

“The people and patients make community pharmacy fun, and my time at the hospital is new and exciting,” he said. “I get the best of both worlds each week.”

Hulsizer said their jobs are different enough that they encounter a different set of problems.

“We work in very different settings, so we can talk about our different experiences, but also, we can still relate to each other,” said Hulsizer. “Being in the same field is also helpful because we can help each other with things we don’t often see ourselves.”

Outside of work, they enjoy their three-year-old rescue dog, Milo, trying new restaurants and traveling.

“We have traveled all around including, Mexico, Canada, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Baltimore, Orlando, New Orleans and Hawaii (twice) with hopes of traveling to Japan or Europe in the coming years,” Hulsizer said.

Both Fort Worth natives, Hulsizer and Torres recently celebrated their eighth anniversary and are engaged to be married in 2024.
