National Osteopathic Medicine Week begins April 20
UNT Health Science Center will celebrate National Osteopathic Medicine Week from April 20-24 to increase awareness of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic doctors in communities across the country.
More than 2,800 osteopathic doctors, or DOs, have received their medical degrees from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, which is Texas’ only osteopathic medical school. Many of its graduates practice primary care, helping alleviate the shortage of family physicians.
“DOs practice a ‘whole person’ approach to medicine and focus on preventive health care,” according to the American Osteopathic Association. “They also receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system and
osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), in which osteopathic physicians use their hands to diagnose illness and injury.”
In the U.S. there are 92,000 DOs; Tarrant County has more than 700.
This year’s celebration begins April 20. TCOM’s student organizations are holding several events, coordinated by TCOM’s Medical Student Government Association. All are free of charge:
Monday, April 20: “TCOM and Osteopathic Medicine,” a presentation for students in two locations:
- Noon-1 p.m.

Tuesday, April 21:
- 10 a.m. – Proclamation of NOM Week by Tarrant County Commissioners, Tarrant Administration Building, 100 E. Weatherford Street, Suite 502A, Fort Worth
- 5-6 p.m. – Blood pressure checks for the public and chats with osteopathic medical students. West Seventh Street Plaza, on Crockett Street between Currie and Norwood streets, just south of West Seventh, Fort Worth
- 7 p.m. – Proclamation of NOM Week by Fort Worth City Council. City Hall, 1000 Throckmorton St., Fort Worth
Wednesday, April 22: Educating high school students about osteopathic medicine with a presentation by medical students
- 11 a.m.-1 p.m. – Southwest High School, cafeteria hallway, 4100 Altamesa Blvd., Fort Worth
Thursday, April 23: “A Day in the Life of a DO Internist” presented by Jaremy James, DO, UNT Health internal medicine specialist-open to the public.
- Noon-1 p.m. – UNTHSC, Medical Education and Training Building, Room 124, 1000 Montgomery St., Fort Worth
Friday, April 24: Soft-tissue manipulation clinic providing hands-on demonstrations of pain relief with stretching, gentle pressure and resistance-open to the public.
