Office of Admissions & Recruitment hosted its 2nd Annual Student Ambassador Pinning Ceremony
Table confetti, charcuterie boards and the musical stylings of DJ Question Mark accented the palpable sense of excitement that filled the first-floor lobby of the Institutional Research & Education Building on Wednesday, April 26, as The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth’s Office of Admissions & Recruitment hosted its 2nd Annual Student Ambassador Pinning Ceremony.
The event is an opportunity for A&R to thank all of HSC’s current students who served as ambassadors during the academic year. These acts of service included leading prospective students and their loved ones on campus tours, participating in virtual events and volunteering at in-person events such as school-specific preview days, the prospective student-focused “HSC Experience” in the fall and the incoming student-focused myHSC Day held in the spring.
The ceremony began with opening remarks from Rebeca Perfecto, director of Admissions, Recruitment. Perfecto thanked the student ambassadors for their efforts during the academic year.
“You gave us 840 hours of your time,” she said, “Give yourselves a round of applause. That is amazing!”
Perfecto also shared feedback from prospective students and applicants that praised the student ambassadors for volunteering and sharing their own knowledge and experience.
“The student ambassadors were extremely supportive and kind and really knowledgeable about the program I am interested in,” said one applicant to the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. “They went above and beyond to help answer my questions and even went overtime showing me the campus and explaining the curriculum of TCOM.”
Perfecto also shared the remarks of an applicant to HSC’s School of Public Health.
“They were really welcoming and enthusiastic throughout the tour. They answered the many questions that I had, and I left feeling more confident in my decision to accept my admission into [HSC].”
In addition to the 840 volunteer hours ambassadors contributed to recruitment efforts, they also spent a combined total of 625 hours participating in student panels, virtual information sessions, applicant workshops, calling campaigns and various other activities.
The A&R team also took time to recognize individual ambassadors who had gone above and beyond in their service. This included students from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program, the Physician Assistant program, and the HSC College of Pharmacy. This year’s Ambassador of the Year honorees included:
Jerry Amomoy, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine Ambassador of The Year; Valeria Galvan, Doctor of Physical Therapy Ambassador of The Year; Justin Chaves, Physician Assistant Ambassador of The Year; and Alyssa Ching, Pharmacy Ambassador of The Year
This year’s ceremony also included a new award dedicated to the contributions of an outstanding faculty member that had gone above and beyond to partner with the A&R team to assist in the recruitment of prospective students and motivate recently admitted students to commit to HSC.
The inaugural recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Rance Berg, assistant dean of Graduate Education & Admissions in the School of Biomedical Science.
The night concluded with an unexpected appearance by HSC president, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams, and Ruth Roman, executive vice president and chief operating officer, who joined students and staff in a celebratory dance to R&B artist Cupid’s popular line-dance hit, the “Cupid Shuffle”.
The student ambassador program is managed by the Office of Admissions & Recruitment at HSC. Currently, the ambassador program includes 95 active students from five of the six colleges and schools that make up HSC.
