Students help connect at-risk women with free mammograms
UNT Health Science Center students are helping connect at-risk women to potentially life-saving breast cancer screenings and prevention information.
At a recent event in East Arlington, volunteers signed up women for fully-funded and low-cost mammograms that will be offered May 17 during a regional Breast Cancer Screening Day.
Many of the women who attended the Arlington event had not undergone a mammogram in several years. Students helped test the women’s knowledge of breast cancer risks and prevention.
Two similar sign-up events will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at 6 Stones, 209 N. Industrial Blvd. in Bedford; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MLK Jr. Community Center, 5565 Truman Dr. in southeast Fort Worth.
Breast Cancer Screening Day will involve the unprecedented coordination of Tarrant County cancer prevention resources. Mobile health units from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth and Moncrief Cancer Institute will provide free mammograms, and Solis Health and Tarrant County Public Health have partnered to make available standing facilities.
This project was organized by the Tarrant County Cancer Disparities Coalition, which was conveyed in 2012 by the Center for Community Health within UNT Health Science Center in partnership with the NIH-designated Texas Center for Health Disparities. The project was funded by a grant from Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth.
