Clinical experiences for students, online education and an opportunity for professional growth were just a few of the takeaways for Dr. Priya Bui, chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Women’s Health at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, who finished up a year-long development program.
Bui participated in the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine’s Senior Leadership Development Program. The program paired Bui with a mentor and other leaders across the nation to work on individual and group activities. Her mentor was Dr. Kenneth J. Veit, senior vice president of Academic Affairs at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“I think the biggest growth was in meeting colleagues across the nation,” Bui said. “It was inspiring but also in some ways humbling as we are all tackling many of the same challenges. It was a unifying experience.”
The program began in 2017 in partnership with the Academy for Advancing Leadership. The SLDP provides a unique opportunity for one-on-one and group engagement with experienced college of osteopathic medicine deans who serve as mentors. Small and highly interactive, the SLDP also fosters learning and networking with colleagues from institutions across the country.
The program concludes with a capstone project that requires teams to research a critical issue facing schools. The project outcome is a presentation at a national conference or manuscript and publication, including peer review, from which the entire osteopathic medical education community can benefit.
Bui’s capstone project involved online education and its implications on board scores for students.
“It was interesting to see the impact across medical schools through a survey we were able to complete across all osteopathic schools,” Bui said. “With well over a 95% response we were able to have a good understanding of the pandemic response with online curriculum and return to in-person. We also looked at board scores for Osteopathic medical schools and touched base on the impact across law and nursing schools.”
The capstone project outcomes were presented during the recent AACOM Educating Leaders conference. The year-long development program also led to reinforce how important clinical experience is for medical students
“The importance of our clinical experiences for students was certainly something that I walked away very thankful for,” she said. “I am very grateful for the rich mentorship within our osteopathic community as well as a culture of medical education professionals who seek better medicine and health of others.”
Bui was paired with five other leaders from across the nation in osteopathic medicine. She is the third individual from TCOM to complete the SLDP program since its inception in 2017. TCOM’s Dr. Lisa Nash was a member of the inaugural cohort in 2017 and Dr. Rita Patterson was a member of the 2021-22 cohort.
