TCOM’s Dr. John Licciardone receives grant from the American Osteopathic Association
The American Osteopathic Association has awarded a $100,000 grant to Dr. John Licciardone, Executive Director of the Osteopathic Research Center and its PRECISION Pain Research Registry for the research project entitled “Osteopathic vs Allopathic Physician Opioid Prescribing for Chronic Pain: A Longitudinal Study of Long-Term Outcomes and the Role of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment.”
The grant, which will run from September 2021 through February 2023, is the 14th research award to Dr. Licciardone from the American Osteopathic Association since 1997.
“The American Osteopathic Association has generously supported our research at The University of North Texas Health Science Center for over two decades,” said Dr. Licciardone. “I am pleased that this new award will further support our efforts within the Osteopathic Research Center to demonstrate the distinctive aspects of osteopathic medicine in combating the ongoing opioid crisis, particularly through the use of non-pharmacological treatments advocated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Physicians.”
The project will enroll 1,000 participants with chronic low back pain within the PRECISION Pain Research Registry and follow them over 12 months to compare the opioid prescribing patterns of osteopathic and allopathic physicians, as well as measure related drug adverse events and clinical outcomes involving pain intensity, physical functioning, and health-related quality of life. It will also determine if the clinical outcomes of patients treated by osteopathic physicians are mediated by less frequent opioid prescribing or use of osteopathic manipulative treatment.
Dr. Licciardone, an HSC Regents Professor, has authored over 100 articles and been funded by more than 40 grants, including over 30 consecutive years of extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Education and other national organizations.
