U.S. News ranks TCOM as top osteopathic school for primary care
U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of best medical schools for primary care, and HSC’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine was the highest ranked DO school in the nation. TCOM had the highest ranking of osteopathic schools and was ranked 72nd among all medical schools across the country.
“We as an osteopathic medical school are very proud to have had the number of graduates pursue a career in primary care,” said Dr. Frank Filipetto, Dean of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. “The need is so great in our state and nation. The roots of our osteopathic profession remain strong in TCOM and have been that way for the last 50 years.”
In addition, TCOM had 56 percent of its graduates enter primary care specialties between 2017 and 2019, which ranked 17th in the nation. TCOM’s Class of 2020 had just over 60 percent of its graduates match in primary care.
TCOM is helping address the shortage of physicians in Texas, including in rural communities. Its ROME program has seen over 70 percent of its graduates working in primary care.
To put together the primary care rankings, U.S. News relied on surveys it gathered from most medical schools as well as test scores, average GPA and the number of students entering primary care specialties upon graduation.
