UNTHSC celebrates World Refugee Day
Amy Raines-Milenkov, MPH, DrPH |
World Refugee Day honors the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under the threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
UNT Health Science Center will host an event for those who want to learn more about refugees and opportunities for promoting the health and well-being of refugees in the community.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Medical Education & Training (MET) Building, Room 125 South, 1000 Montgomery St. This event is open to the public.
To register or for more information, contact Leah Zimmerman at 817-735-0141 or leah.zimmerman@unthsc.edu.
UNTHSC is helping refugees throughout Tarrant County.
Amy Raines-Milenkov, MPH, DrPH, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is leading a community-based research project, the Building Bridges Initiative, to fill gaps in social services available to these refugees. The Building Bridges Program recently received a Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas grant.
Building Bridges soon will be reaching out to the community to provide cancer prevention education and assistance in scheduling screenings with UNTHSC Nurse Midwives, and other services to refugee women and their families.
For more information about the Building Bridges program, call Eva Baker at 817-735-0316 or Dr. Raines-Milenkov at 817-735-0109.
