UNTHSC Foundation Board surprises outgoing chairman with scholarship award

Allan Howeth officially has handed over leadership of the UNT Health Science Center Foundation Board to the new chairman, Bob Ferguson.

But before he did, Ferguson and other board members announced a surprise for the outgoing chairman – a $25,000 endowed scholarship in Howeth’s name that will generate a scholarship award to a deserving UNTHSC student every year.

Board members and friends raised the money to honor Howeth’s tremendous guidance of the board during his two years as chairman, as well as his own generous support of UNTHSC student scholarships, Ferguson said.

Howeth joined the Foundation Board in January 2005, and has served on its Executive Committee, Development Committee and Nominating Committee.  He has been particularly supportive of efforts to expand scholarship funding for students.

Howeth said he was surprised and moved by the scholarship announcement.

“That was very unexpected,” Howeth said. “I’ve never had anything like that named for me. Thank you very much.”
