UNTHSC keeps top ranking in primary care, rural medicine from U.S. News & World Report
UNT Health Science Center ranks among the top medical schools in the country for primary care for the 13th consecutive year, according to U.S. News & World Report. UNTHSC is first in Texas and fourth nationally in the percentage of graduates entering the field.
The magazine listed UNTHSC’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) as No. 48 in the country out of more than 150 eligible medical schools. The Rural Medical Education program ranked No. 11 nationally, up four slots from a year ago.
“We are particularly proud of our rural initiative to bring primary care to all of the citizens of Texas,” said Don Peska, DO, Dean of TCOM.
Sixty four percent of TCOM graduates enter primary care, serving as bulwarks in an era of growing shortages in family medicine, general internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.
By 2025, the primary care physician shortage nationwide is expected to hit 50,000. Texas is 45th in the nation in physicians per population, according to the Texas Medical Association.
