UNTHSC welcomes new Family Medicine chair

Frank Filipetto, DO, recently was named chair of Family Medicine. Before joining the UNT Health Science Center on July 15, he was the vice chairman of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey‘s (UMDNJ) Family Medicine Department. Filipetto holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, graduating summa cum laude from Temple University in Philadelphia, and a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Filipetto earned several UMDNJ honors, including Master Educator, Excellence in Teaching and Teacher of the Year awards. He received the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians Fellow Award in 2003. In addition, he serves on several committees of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

His responsibilities at the Health Science Center will include oversight of the Department of Family Medicine, including implementing an extensive undergraduate curriculum with focus on the teaching of principles of primary care medicine. Filipetto will also work to expand the research efforts of the Department of Family Medicine including support of the Primary Care Research Institute, increasing faculty participation in industry-sponsored clinical trials and growing recognition for the health science center through scholarly production by department faculty.
