Office of Sustainability

The Office of Sustainability, within Facilities Management, was established in 2011 after the students voted to implement a fee to fund more environmental and sustainable improvements on campusWe support HSC’s mission to “create solutions for a healthier community” by advancing sustainable practices on campus through educational outreach, programs and initiatives, and our own campus operationsLearn more at unthsc.edu/sustainability.

Long before the Office of Sustainability was established, Facilities Management has been working to save energy and operation more efficientlyIn fact, our efforts have saved the university over $14 millionLearn more about our energy projects over the years here.

While HSC offers many ways to recycle, we want to first emphasize the importance of reducing and reusingThis can be done in simple ways by using reusables (e.g. water bottles and utensils), reducing printing by double sided printing or working electronically, and taking advantage of Property Control’s resources (asking them for supplies before buying new).

For recycling needs, we have co-mingle (i.e. most common recyclables go in the same container) containers throughout campus.  Items such as paper, clean hard plastic, cans, and cardboard can go in those bins.  We also have the Recycling 2.0 Program that accepts batteries, ink cartridges/toners, and cellphones.  More information about our recycling can be found here.

In 2023, we did start a compost drop-off program for the HSC community.  More information on how to particpate in that program can be found here.

The HSC Community Garden is located on the north side of campus, and we have thirty-five 12’x4’ garden plots managed by students, employees, and community members.  If you are interested in getting a plot or volunteering with us, email sustainability@unthsc.edu or visit unthsc.edu/communitygarden for more information.

The Office of Sustainability subsidizes annual transit passes for both students and employees each year at over 70% regular pricesIn addition, you can get monthly passes at 25% off regular prices. Learn more here.

The Office of Sustainability funded the installation of four dual port Level 2 chargers (meaning 8 cars can charge at one time).  They are located in Lot 19 and the West Parking Garage.  To learn more about rates, parking, and EV charging etiquette, click here.
