For adults 45 and older, a screening colonoscopy is very important. Further, you may need to see a gastroenterologist if you have unusual changes in bowel habits, bloody stool, cramping, pain, or discomfort.

Initially, the doctor will discuss your symptoms, personal health and family history, and diet and exercise routine. From there, your doctor might recommend testing or begin forming a treatment plan.

Check with your insurance provider prior to making an appointment with your gastroenterologist. If you are experiencing unexplained symptoms, schedule with your PCP first as they can sometimes treat your condition or determine if you need to see a specialist. 

Unexplained stomach pain, recurring or severe heartburn or reflux, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, changes in bowel habits, or blood in stool are all signs of gastrointestinal distress.

If you are experiencing recurring or severe acid reflux, it may be time to see a GI specialist. Your primary care provider may be able to advise you based on the severity and frequency of your symptoms and advise you on if you need a specialist.

Colon cancer doesn’t always have physical signs, so it is recommended that individuals 45 and older have a colonoscopy screening. Your PCP may recommend you begin screening before the age of 45 if you have a family history of colon cancer. Some signs of colon cancer include changes to bowel movements, rectal bleeding or bloody stool, weight loss or weight gain, pain, cramping, or anemia.
