Animal Research

 

 At the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) we value animal welfare, and see the use of animals in research as a privilege. The Animal Care and Use program at UNTHSC is committed to the care and welfare of all animals within the program, and is supported by two important units: The Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

The Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM):

Comprised of Professional Staff :

          * Veterinarians

          * Animal Care Takers

          * Support Staff

To ensure research animals needs are met in their:

           * Health

          * Welfare

           * Housing

Works closely with the compliance committees, but is not a regulatory unit.

It’s the place where animals live and research gets done! 

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC):

Comprised of experienced Members & Staff:

          * Chair & Vice Chairs

          * Scientific/ Non-Scientific & Community Members

          * Administrators

To assess the institution’s program through the review of:

          * Proposed and on-going animal use activities

          * The Program

          * The Animal Use Facilities

Ensures animal research is approved before animals are used.

Strives to protect the animals, the researchers and the institution through a culture of compliance!
