Biography:
Dr. Cooney earned her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed a traditional internship at Brooke Army Medicine Center, and then served for six years as a Flight Surgeon for the United States Army. She is currently completing her Family Medicine Residency at UIWSOM and is excited to continue as a Fellow in Geriatrics, Hospice, and Palliative Care at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.
Summary for Poster:
As our population continues to age and demand for geriatricians increases, Osteopathic Undergraduate Medical Education (OUME) needs to adapt by producing physicians capable of filling this need. With the unification of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Graduate Medical Education (GME) now merged under the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), OUME must ensure both the American Association for Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) geriatric and palliative care competencies are obtained so learners are best prepared for GME. As UIWSOM is a new osteopathic medical school with an innovative curriculum, a new comprehensive standard of minimum geriatrics and palliative care competencies was produced to ensure UIWSOM best prepares graduates for GME and caring for our aging population.
