Family Medicine Residency
Director: James Aston, D.O.
Coordinator: Linda Matthews
The Program
Our family medicine residency, located at both UNT HSC and Medical City Fort Worth, trains physicians to manage a majority of the clinical problems seen in a family medicine clinic. The program is accredited by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and is honored to be Osteopathically Recognized.
Your Training
Residents learn to evaluate, manage a wide variety of medical problems regardless of diagnosis, gender, age of the patient or severity of illness, while adhering to the standards of care in a model family practice setting. Residents learn common inpatient procedures such as central line placement, ventilator management, intubation, and common outpatient procedures including OMT, EKG, spirometry, POC ultrasound, joint injections, soft tissue injections, IUD insertion, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, Nexplanon insertion, skin biopsy, and minor office surgeries.
Clinical Considerations
The program length is 36 months, and consists of 39-4 week clinical and educational blocks that focus on both inpatient and outpatient setting. During your time with us, you will work in a hospital, a model ambulatory clinic, community health centers, and private offices of the attending physician. Ambulatory clinical training occurs at the model family practice clinic located on the campus of the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNT HSC) in Fort Worth, Texas which is an easy 15-minute commute to the training Hospital for residents and patients.
The ambulatory clinic experience will provide the resident with a continuing care exposure to a panel of private and government assisted patients. Full time board‐certified family physician faculty supervises all resident clinical encounters. PGY1 residents spend one half‐day per week in the ambulatory clinic, while PGY2 and PGY3 residents spend on average four half‐days in the clinic. Residents evaluations follow the ACGME approved competency based evaluation system. Resident inputs are used to improve the program. Additionally, residents may sit for the Lifestyle Medicine boards upon successful completion of the additional curriculum in Lifestyle Medicine.
