Pre-Clinical Curriculum

Each semester in the pre-clinical curriculum includes systems-based courses along with parallel delivery of medical practice and professional identity and health system practice courses. The systems-based courses are delivered via a “two-pass” approach where the first pass focuses on normal structure and function of various body systems and the second pass addresses diseases organized by patient presentation. These courses provide students with the opportunity to acquire appropriate medical knowledge necessary to articulate foundational biomedical science, epidemiological, osteopathic principles, and clinical science concepts as well as explain common and important patient presentations.

The Medical Practice courses allow students to learn and apply essential skills including communication, interviewing, physical exam, osteopathic manipulative medicine, documentation of clinical encounters, oral presentations, point-of-care ultrasound, and other procedural skills.  These courses align with the content in the Systems courses to integrate their medical knowledge with the associated competencies in osteopathic principles and practice, patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, and professionalism.

The Professional Identity and Health Systems Practice courses develop learner’s competencies in communication, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice to help TCOM graduates change the way healthcare is delivered. Content areas include ethics, innovation, patient safety, policy, health promotions and disease prevention, interprofessional education, and population/public health. These courses continue throughout all four years and are designed to address health system sciences as the “third pillar” of medical education to complement the basic sciences and clinical sciences.
