Valubility of the Month: October-November 2016

The October-November recipients of Valubility of the Month have learned that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others.

These recipients of the Valubility of the Month honor were selected from among dozens of nominees that a UNTHSC committee reviewed.

	Geoff McInturf, TCOM 2019 Student Plenty of TCOM students have Geoff McInturf to thank for their academic success. In his role as Curriculum Rep, he goes out of his way to make sure his classmates have the support they need to excel in medical school. That translates into posting his class notes online, meeting with professors to get the most up-to-date information for class and doing whatever he can to ensure his fellow students are supported. For Geoff, serving others first means going out of his way to help classmates prepare for a test, even when it means sacrificing his own study time. Nominated by Amy Owen & James Meiling
	Officer Eduardo Mendoza If it’s lunchtime, expect to find UNTHSC Police Officer Eduardo Mendoza in the middle of Montgomery Street stopping traffic and keeping the campus safe. After he observed the heavy traffic that clogs up the street and puts pedestrians at risk, he took it upon himself to direct drivers and make it easier for pedestrians to cross Montgomery Street between the EAD and MET. Not only has he made it safer for pedestrians, his positive attitude, quick smile and kind words have gone a long way toward brightening their day. Nominated by Sara Murphy
	Tony Hall, Facilities Management It’s the little things that make a big difference and illustrate our values, as Tony Hall has certainly shown. For two years he has driven two of his co-workers to the Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) downtown so they can catch their rides home. He doesn’t stop there. He encourages his co-workers to pick their favorite music for the ride and use his phone charger. He also provides snacks and drinks. Even when he might be able to leave work early, he stays to drive his co-workers downtown. Nominated by Sandy Bauman
	Julia Reynolds, PA Studies There are 78 students in Julia Reynolds’ class, and each and every one of them gets handwritten notes – complete with smiley faces and sweet remarks — on their papers. She been described as “the sweetest teacher ever,” who takes time out of her busy schedule to provide every student with helpful feedback. She empowers her students, models respect and shows them how important it is to build rapport with patients. She is always looking for ways to help her students grow as health care providers. 	Chrystyna Senkel, PA studies Chrystyna Senkel is the kind of educator who will come to the campus on a Saturday to help a student who is struggling or to provide her classes with extra opportunities to learn physical exam skills. She is constantly looking for ways to help her students learn and succeed, even going as far as creating her own study guides with crucial information. Her students know they can ask her any question without fear of being judged. She encourages collaboration, provides opportunities to engage with others and helps create a culture of fun and community within the PA program.
