Valubility of the Month: September 2018
September 27, 2018 • valubility, VOTM
The September recipients of Valubility of the Month live out UNTHSC’s five core values on a day-to-day basis.
These recipients of the Valubility of the Month honor were selected from among dozens of nominees that a UNTHSC committee reviewed.

Geoff McInturf
TCOM Student
During difficult times, Geoff McInturf is the kind of person who will drop everything to help a stranger.
When he noticed an obviously distressed student sitting outside the classroom doors, Geoff jumped into action. Many people would have walked by and ignored the student, but Geoff took the time to sit with this person and make sure that he had a friend during his time of need. He put the needs of a fellow student above his own and offered him comfort and support. Geoff also contacted a faculty member and eventually connected the student in need to campus resources to help him move forward.
This is a true example of living our UNTHSC values. |

JC Killingsworth
Police Officer
Officer J.C. Killingsworth is soft spoken, but his actions are mighty.
For the UNT Regents meeting he single handedly set up a work station for the public service officers, knowing this work station would make it more convenient for them to meet and greet the UNT Regents and guests as they made their way into the parking lot that morning.
He took it upon himself to set up a large umbrella anchored by a five-gallon paint bucket filled with cement. Then he set up a folding chair underneath the umbrella. He also brought a cooler filled with ice and drinks for the officers.
With this single act of kindness, he exemplified the values as well as built trust – the cornerstone of all five.

Paul Bowman, MD
Chairman and Professor, Pediatrics
Many people talk about the values, but Dr. W. Paul Bowman puts them into action.
Under his leadership, the clinical practice has grown stronger and new strategic practices have been adopted to engage the community. He also founded a summer research program that has benefited hundreds of TCOM students over the past 5 years.
When the Texas Pediatric Society needed more physicians to mentor TCOM students, Dr. Bowman took the initiative to recruit qualified doctors to meet the need. When undergraduate and high school students asked him for advice, Dr. Bowman supported them by providing opportunities that were coordinated with his department faculty. Two undergraduate and five high school students were mentored under his leadership.
Under his leadership, the Crump Foundation has awarded $150,000 to support the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Registry to maintain the database of these patients in the DFW area. |

Mike Richardson
Assistant Professor, Physiotherapy
Mike Richardson selflessly gives of his time and resources to provide advice and practical steps to help others in their development.
He has taken the independent initiative to plan outings to bring faculty together and enhance working relationships. He has hosted smoothie and ice cream socials as rewards for hard work and accomplishments.
He selflessly gives of his time to mentor others. He continually changes instructional techniques to enhance the learning experience and seeks feedback on ways he can improve the process.
Each year he looks for ways to make his class run 10% more efficiently |

Shawn Rahman
TCOM Student
Shawn Rahman has an unwavering drive to succeed, but he has an even greater commitment to helping his classmates do well too.
There are always opportunities to take the easy way out but Shawn never does. He is so trustworthy that the owner of a restaurant that he often visits for breakfast gave him a running tab that he pays off once a week.
Shawn treats everyone with respect. When his class was arguing about changing the honors points system, Shawn presented opinions so respectfully that even those who disagreed with him respected what he has to say. He knows how to handle any tense situation, without ever rubbing anyone the wrong way.
Shawn wants to open up a health clinic in Bangladesh and he uses that dream to keep him moving forward when school gets tough. He wakes up every morning at 4 am, listens to a motivational speech, and then he makes every hour of the day count – not just for himself but others. |
