Background and History of the BNT

The Center for Anatomical Sciences at the HSC has hosted bioskills events for several decades. Our initial space was a small area set aside in the back end of our gross anatomy laboratory. Back then, training of orthopedic residents on hip and knee replacement surgeries was done on a regular basis. In 2008, we received funding to build a new 1100 sq. ft. bioskills laboratory. There, a variety of health care professionals were trained including PAs, EMTs, medical students, clinicians, fellows, and residents.

Around 2011, we began hosting groups from outside the north Texas area. We have undergone several renovations since then and now have over 8,000 square feet of skills training space to offer. In addition, we have a highly-qualified team of Willed Body Program staff for event support. The cadaveric specimens they prepare are of the highest quality found anywhere in the U.S.

In 2020, our facility was rebranded the BioSkills of North Texas. We are known on campus as HSC’s BioSkills Lab. In the new 2000 sq. ft. lab, we added 12 additional clinical training stations equipped with Getinge shadowless, surgical lights and cameras. In 2023, we added an additional 3,000 sq. ft. lab, making it easier to host 2 or more events simultaneously. Highlights of the new BNT include: dressing rooms with lockers, a 70-seat classroom, a large food service area, and conference room. These spaces are connected to 4,500 square feet of additional clinical laboratory space, allowing us to accommodate small to very large groups. We have classrooms of all sizes to match participants size of any clinical skills event.
