HSC College of Pharmacy hosted the inaugural P3 Pinning Ceremony last month for the Class of 2024. The event celebrated the culmination of the student’s academic achievements in their first three years of pharmacy school and the beginning of their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations.
In their fourth and final year, pharmacy students complete required six-week clinical rotations, providing immersive patient care experiences under a pharmacist’s supervision, ranging from community pharmacy services to inpatient settings and other practice areas.
Scheduled on the heels of a nearly two-day APPE Boot Camp orientation, students, faculty and staff came together for the momentous occasion. Each student was “pinned” by a faculty member with a customized Class of 2024 lapel pin featuring one of the most significant symbols in pharmacy, the Bowl of Hygeia.
“The Bowl of Hygeia and your White Coat are symbols of your commitment to your patients and your profession,” said Dr. S. Suresh Madhavan, College of Pharmacy dean. “As you begin your APPE rotations, always remember the significance of these symbols and strive to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, compassion and ethics in your practice. Congratulations on this momentous occasion, and we wish you all the best in your APPE rotations and final year of pharmacy school.”
The inaugural faculty pinners included department chairs, Dr. Meredith Howard and Dr. Kyle Emmitte; vice chairs, Dr. Lisa Killam-Worrall and Dr. Denise Inman; and experiential faculty, Dr. Brittney Cox, director for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences, and Dr. Jennifer Fix, director for Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences.
The ceremony concluded with the reading of the Oath of a Pharmacist, led by Worrall.
“As the pinning occurred, each student was filled with joy and pride,” she said. “I am so excited for them to reach this point of the program, and I’m confident they will gain robust experiences on their rotations to become practice-ready pharmacists.”
