Change in Federal Common Rule for Human Subject Research
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and fifteen other Federal Departments and Agencies have issued final revisions to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (the “Revised Common Rule” or “Final Rule”) that went into effect January 21, 2019. For those investigators seeking in-depth information on the various features of this new Common Rule, we have contracted a specific training course at CITI to assist in your understanding of the subtleties and nuances of these changes. For access to this training course, go to the CITI home page. Login as usual, then go to the “North Texas Regional IRB” affiliation (not UNTHSC), click on “View Courses”, then scroll down to “Revised Common Rule”.

New Financial Reporting Tool rolling out: Grants WorkCenter in EIS
STARs members have been trained on the new financial reporting tool for Sponsored Projects: Grants Workcenter. This new tool in EIS allows real-time reporting of budget, encumbrances, and expenditures on sponsored projects. Department Administrators who attend STARs have been given access to this new tool as Phase I of the rollout. We are taking their feedback and using it to improve on the tool before it is rolled out campus wide. This new tool will replace Bud_Overview in EIS, and access to Bud_Overview will be phased out in the new year.
December Monthly Report Now in PowerBI
The Monthly Report data for December is now available in Power BI. We are excited to announce some improvements made to our Monthly Research Dashboard on the Insite reporting page.
· The first thing you will notice is the prominent toggle switch at the top. Clicking on this will reveal a new view of the data, showing the entire two prior fiscal year’s totals as well as the current year to date totals. In addition, the bottom pie charts reflect the entire prior fiscal year by School.
· The second tab of the report is brand new. This tab reflects Awards by Institute, and shows the amount awarded to each institute over time. The pie chart on the right reflects the Total Awarded by Institute for all of FY2017, FY2018 and FY2019 to date.
· Finally, beginning with the “All Monthly Report Data” tab through to the last tab, “Clinical Trial Proposals” the Project End Date field has been added to the table.
If you have any questions, or suggestions for improvement to this report, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via email at OSP-Grants-IT@unthsc.edu
If you would like to dig into your data in Power BI, but don’t know where to start, we have updated our handy instruction guide.

New Funding Opportunities for Basic Experimental Studies Involving Humans
Posted on November 28, 2018 by Mike Lauer and William T. Riley
Over the past year, since we published an essay in Nature Human Behaviour on “NIH policies on experimental studies with humans,” NIH has engaged in a discussion with the basic science community to find ways to meet our shared obligations to study participants and taxpayers, while respecting the unique goals and outcomes of basic science. While we are still in the midst of that conversation, we are pleased to announce real progress in the form of new funding opportunity announcements for Basic Experimental Studies involving Humans.
